Exhibition

The exhibition celebrating the lives of Soviet Jews who fought in the Great Patriotic War. The events of 1941–1945 will be presented through the lens of history and the fates of individuals who underwent severe hardship and made an invaluable contribution to the collective feat of the country.

From May 7 to August 4, 2024, the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center will host an exhibition celebrating the lives of Soviet Jews who fought in the Great Patriotic War. The events of 1941–1945 will be presented through the lens of history and the fates of individuals who underwent severe hardship and made an invaluable contribution to the collective feat of the country.

The multimedia exhibition will feature unique archival materials such as recordings of wartime diaries, archival footage, and photographs. Curators have paid meticulous attention to the organization of the exhibition space as they sought to create an environment that should help visitors better understand the subject.

As of June 1941, more than 5,000,000 Jews lived in the USSR, all of whom witnessed or were directly involved in the wartime events. Their ranks included men and women, career officers and individuals with no military background, those who volunteered for the army and those who were called up. Some emerged from the war as distinguished military commanders or heroes, while others remained sergeants or lieutenants. The exhibition showcases diaries, transcripts of conversations, and wartime letters, giving prominence to the contribution of each individual on the path to victory.

The exhibition opens with a section dedicated to the defense of Moscow and the battles of the summer and fall of 1941. Another chapter tells the story of the people’s militia and spotlights the tragic fate of the so-called writers’ platoon, mostly made up of Jews who volunteered to fight in the war.

War correspondents took part in all major battles, taking pictures of soldiers during combat and short periods of rest and writing about the horrors of war and the feats of heroes. Visitors of the exhibition will see for themselves the contribution they made both to victory and the preservation of memory. Ilya Ehrenburg, Vasily Grossman, Mikhail Rosenfeld, and Jack Altauzen are some of the featured journalists.
A section of the exhibition features a unique collection of photographs by Yevgeny Khaldei, previously unseen in Russia. The archive of one of the best-known photographers of the Great Patriotic War is owned by Alexander Borodulin, who received the collection from Khaldei himself. Khaldei assembled it as the body of evidence incriminating fascism: the archive contains photographs found on captive German soldiers and in territories liberated from the fascists.

Yet another section of the exhibition glorifies the heroic deeds of women during the war.

The final room will represent Berlin of 1945 the way it was seen by soldiers who had fought in the war. Documentary photographs by Ilya Aronson and Valery Ginzburg are displayed here alongside pictures from the collection of the Jewish Museum and archival footage.

The exhibition includes items from the collections of the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian State Library, the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center, as well as from the Borodulin Collection, the Blavatnik Archive, and private archives.
